January: Bands To Watch

HONEY LUNG

First up on January's Bands To Watch is London four-piece Honey Lung, who are making waves with their post-grunge sound. This alternative-rock group are combining all the best vibes of 90s rock-distorted guitars, moody basslines, heavy percussion and fuzzy vocals reminiscent to that of Smashing Pumpkins. Describing themselves as 'crack for the soul', there's no denying their punchy track End of Time will leave you intoxicated with the deftly-produced riffs for days. Watch them live at The Montague Arms this February and be in the midst of a wild crowd as these guys earn huge support from rock fans.

VIØLETS

If you follow this blog you already know how much I love this band after seeing them kill their headline gig at Camden Assembly, but if you haven't checked them out now is the time! Their debut track Sinners is a deep alt-pop track with emotional lyrics and thumping beats. Keep an eye out on these guys as they are set to release more music this year, and their next tracks will have you pressing repeat. In the mean time be sure to watch their covers on their Facebook page as they put their own VIØLETS spin on classic indie hits, and watch them live at The Good Ship this February.

THE PLASTICS

For a perfect mix of indie-pop meets psychedelia then look no further than The Plastics. Somewhere between Tame Impala and Arctic Monkeys, this South African quartet blend hazy falsetto vocals, with sweet surf guitars and make you dream of being on a beach in laidback SoCal. Check out their song Alona for a transient track, that has infectious grooves and tropical sounds perfect for escaping the January blues.

BLACK HONEY

Enigmatic vocals and sugar sweet grunge sounds can be found in this Brighton four-piece who have been keeping themselves under the radar, except now the alt music crowd are embracing them and sharing their music everywhere. With hints of Wolf Alice and Lana Del Rey, Black Honey have given the grunge scene a fresh spin with a more up-beat moody vibe. Check out their track Hello Today for punchy rhythms and Madonna for catchy vocal melodies, and be sure to catch them on their upcoming UK tour.

THE NIGHT CAFÉ

The Night Café are one of those bands you find and instantly listen to every song in their discography from start to finish, and don't regret it one bit. Soft and sweet vocal harmonies, reveberant and feel-good guitar riffs, punchy indie-rock drums and groovy basslines make up this Liverpudlian four-piece. There's something refreshing about this band with a relaxed summer vibe that fits somewhere between Two Door Cinema Club, Blossoms and Circa Waves, you can't really define them which is something quite intriguing. It's safe to say there a great mix of all of indie sub-genres, and with a support slot for Sundara Karma and Blaenavon on their upcoming tours, it won't be long before this band will be playing to the masses on their own headline tour.

THE LIGHTNING YEAR

After seeing this psychedelic-pop five-piece play recently at The Social it's definitely clear these guys need to be on your radar. This London-born band had only released one demo, but that didn't stop the crowd from going insane for their huge tracks. The guys have also just dropped their debut single Endless Memory which offers hypnotic synthesisers and unforgettable lyrics, making for an expansive track that's bound to shoot them into the masses.

TRASH

This four-piece from Chesterfield are relatively fresh on the music scene, having been together just two years and finally gaining the recognition they deserve. Dreamy indie-pop is the best way to describe the feel-good music these youthful guys create, with their optimistic track Hot Coffee combining romanticised lyrics with reverberant guitar riffs that you'll be humming all day. Having played a host of festivals like Y Not and Leeds last year as well as a host of gigs with artists like Rat Boy and InHeaven, the new year is set to be huge for this band.

DIVENIRE

For ridiculously catchy alternative-rock tracks this Staffordshire four-piece is exactly what you need. Melodic vocals, emotive lyrics, dynamic riffs and epic drum beats are provided by this band, and their latest track Arcade cleverly combines these qualities into one huge song which won't disappoint. The future is set to be big for these guys and I for one cannot wait to see what they release next. Be sure to catch them at their next gig February 3rd at O2 Academy Brixton supporting Hermitage Green alongside Chasing Deer.
